What Can the Ground Do?

As many people live their spiritual lives, they lose themselves in the thought, “What should I do for God?” They have so many things to do such as, praying with all their heart, reading the Bible, giving offerings, witnessing, and so on. However, when we read the Bible, we can see that God did not tell us to do that.

“In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.” (Genesis 1:1–2)

The ground here represents human beings. What can the ground do when it is without form, void, and within darkness? It can do nothing. When you look at the ground, you will probably think, “The ground is trapped in darkness. It is useless.”

But, God began to work on the ground. When God said, “Let there be light,” there was light, and the darkness withdrew. When God said let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters, the immeasurable amount of water that was encompassing the ground went up to the sky and the ground was uncovered. Even after the ground was uncovered, there was nothing it could do on its own. Then, God said, “Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit after his kind, whose seed is in itself, upon the earth.” The water that had gone up to the sky became rain as it fell and the sun shone as sprouts came forth by the sunshine, and blossomed into flowers to bear fruits.

God Who Saved Moses

Exodus chapter 1 begins with the people of Israel living a life of slavery in Egypt. They were living a tiring life of mixing dirt and baking bricks. However, what gave them even more pain was being forced to throw their male babies into the Nile River. The Pharaoh of Egypt issued an order to, “throw the male babies into the Nile River” when the people of Israel began to increase in number. What could the people of Israel do to become free from the authority of the Pharaoh? Then, Moses was born but, his parents did not throw him into the Nile River; instead, they hid him for three months until they had to leave him on the Nile River in an ark of bulrushes that had been daubed with slime and pitch. God saved Moses and fulfilled the work of leading the people of Israel out of Egypt.

When you read Numbers after Exodus ends, there were a total of 603,550 people, just counting men, when the Israelites left Egypt. Where do you think all those men came from when they were ordered to throw male babies into the Nile River? We only saw God saving Moses and not the others; in fact, God saved all 603,550 men.

I Will Give You Light, I Will Save You

When we meet difficult problems, like the people of Israel having to throw the male babies into the Nile River, that is when God works in us.

“I will give you the light when you are inside of darkness, make water leave you when you are covered in it, I will make you bloom flowers and bear fruits even if you cannot do anything.”

“I will save you from the tiring work of mixing dirt and baking bricks; I will lead you out of Egypt and into Canaan when you are ordered to throw your male babies into the Nile River.”

Just as how God worked in this way, He is saying to us to “wait upon Me since I will work in you.”

We are in difficulty because we try to bear problems; we try to serve God, worrying that God will not work, so we try to take care of them.

He Works even in a Person like Me

The wife of a dead son of the prophets came to the Prophet Elisha in 2 Kings Chapter 4, after she was completely ruined. Elisha did not say, “Do something for me,” but said, “What shall I do for thee?” The wife of the son of the prophets borrowed empty vessels from her neighbors as Elisha told her to do, and poured her one remaining bottle of oil into them. Then, the oil kept on coming out and did not stop. How do you think the wife felt at that moment? She would have thought, “God, You even work in an evil and faithless person like me!”

God not only did the work of filling the vessels with oil, but also He changed the heart of the woman. As the woman saw God working in her life she must have lived a life looking up to God and hoping for Him to work whenever there were problems.

God Desires That You Wait upon Him

“But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.” (Isaiah 40:31)

We start to breathe hard if we run even a little bit, and get tired after a long walk. However, God has said that if we wait upon the Lord, then He will renew our strength. Everyone, aren’t you trying to do something for God today? Have hope that God will work and wait upon Him. Then, God will surely do the work of renewing our strength, and bestowing grace and mercy upon us.
